The Cavagnolo Factory… Since 1904.
Why Is a Cavagnolo So Different?
You are about to discover the answer on this page. The Cavagnolo brand has a truly unique history.
Did you know that Cavagnolo is now the oldest accordion manufacturer in the world still in operation?
Did you also know that Cavagnolo is the only accordion manufacturer to develop its own electronic systems in-house?
The brand’s motto has always been “Cavagnolo, Between Tradition and Innovation.” The following explanations will help you understand why.
Let's start at the Beginning
Cavagnolo… Une histoire
The Cavagnolo brand was founded in 1904 in Vercelli, Italy. Due to the economic difficulties Italy faced during the 1920s, the company relocated to France, in the Lyon region, in 1923.
During the 1930s, the Cavagnolo factory began to build a strong reputation. Musicians placed their complete trust in the quality of its instruments, but there was another reason why they embraced the Cavagnolo brand: its sound.
More and more artists adopted Cavagnolo, and the distinctive Cavagnolo sound soon became a benchmark—an essential reference in the accordion world. It would be impossible to list every artist who has owned a Cavagnolo accordion without leaving someone out, or every famous singer who has been accompanied by one.
This story has continued for decades. The instruments are still crafted today with the same passion, the same dedication, and the same unique expertise. Production remains based in the Lyon region, constantly striving to improve instrument quality through forward-thinking innovations and pioneering developments.
Artists have remained loyal and grateful across generations. Enthusiasts of the brand and its instruments continue to support and inspire us every day. More than a brand, that is what the Cavagnolo story is all about.
Everyone says that a Cavagnolo is impossible to imitate. And do you know why?
That is exactly what we are about to explain.

French-Made Accordion
A Legacy Shaped by Artists
One of the brand’s first ambassadors in France was V. Marceau (Marceau Verschueren, his real name).
This marked the beginning of an extraordinary wave of artists who placed their trust in Cavagnolo. To name just a few: Gus Viseur, Marcel Azzola, Joss Baselli, André Astier, Jöe Rossi, Yvette Horner, Marc Bonel, Bruno Lorenzoni, Jacky Mallerey, Claude Thomain, Tony Fallone…
And later: Roland Romanelli, Éric Bouvelle, Aurélien Noël, Alain Musichini, Ludovic Beier, Richard Galliano, Marc Berthoumieux, Stéphane Courtot-Renoux, Matthieu Chaussalet, Stéphanie Rodriguez, Frédéric Langlais, Julien Labro, João Frade, Dimitri Saussard, Christophe Lampidecchia, Nicolas Massoutié, Jean-Michel Sonnerat, the Maulus Brothers, Daniel Mille, Jean-Robert Chappelet, Nicolas Rapicault, Laurent Derache, Jérôme Robert, Damien Poyard, Jérôme Richard…
Now let’s talk about some of the legendary voices that have been accompanied by a Cavagnolo accordion. Here are just a few examples:
Yves Montand, Charles Trenet, Renaud, Édith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Barbara, Juliette Gréco, Serge Lama, Michel Sardou, Claude Nougaro, Maurane, Nicole Croisille, Roberto Alagna, Sanseverino, Les Stentors, Boy George, Élodie Frégé, Claudio Capéo, Laurent Gerra, Gérard Depardieu…

Have You Ever Taken a Close Look at a Cavagnolo?
Over the years, the shape of Cavagnolo instruments has evolved toward beautifully rounded curves—and this is no coincidence.
First and foremost, it was important to create a distinctive design that would immediately identify the brand, much like the styling of the world’s most prestigious automobile manufacturers. The challenge was to develop a perfectly balanced instrument with an ideal ergonomic shape, allowing musicians to feel comfortable from the very first moment they play.
The mechanism also had to be exceptionally precise in order to provide outstanding airtightness and bellows compression, directly influencing the power, projection, and depth of the sound. This is why every curve of a Cavagnolo has a purpose.
Take a look at the “ears” located at each end of the right-hand keyboard. They ensure perfect support and positioning of the accordion against the inside of the player’s right thigh. This prevents any risk of unintentionally triggering the highest notes while pushing the bellows.
Now look at the rounded shape of the left-hand side. It was never comfortable to feel a sharp edge pressing against the forearm when repeatedly working the bellows. This carefully designed contour provides exceptional comfort, allowing musicians to play for long periods without discomfort.
Let us now talk about the famous Cavagnolo arabesque grille. In a way, it is the grille of our instruments, just as a radiator grille is the signature of a fine automobile. We are particularly proud that many brands and manufacturers continue to draw inspiration from it today.
For decades, this timeless grille—whether chrome-plated or color-matched to the accordion—has been admired by the world’s finest musicians as well as by lovers of beautiful craftsmanship. It has played a major role in building the reputation of Cavagnolo, and preserving this finely crafted grille remains essential to us. Adorned with peacocks and swallows, it is one of the enduring symbols of our brand.
And finally, there is the finishing touch: the Cavagnolo monogram, designed like a true signature, distinguished by its uniquely styled “G”, instantly recognizable to enthusiasts around the world.
What About the Mechanics? Exceptional!
The Mechanics? Truly Exceptional!
The distinctive design of our instruments would never have been possible without a mechanism engineered to meet the highest standards. In this respect, a Cavagnolo stands apart from traditional Italian accordions.
The pronounced curvature of the left-hand side is made possible by our round-wire mechanism, entirely handcrafted at our manufacturing facility. The advantages of this exclusive system are numerous: it offers exceptional precision and touch, while also being completely removable in less than four minutes. Its compact design allows the accordion body to maintain a comfortable rounded shape against the player’s left forearm, while ensuring outstanding long-term reliability. It is, by far, one of the most ingenious accordion mechanisms ever developed.
The right-hand keyboard also features unique characteristics. Its responsiveness and precision are second to none. The key travel can be adjusted to suit individual preferences, allowing for a shorter or longer stroke. Musicians who discover a Cavagnolo keyboard for the first time are often pleasantly surprised by its distinctive angle and the natural, effortless playing experience it provides.
Another handcrafted component found on both the right-hand and left-hand sides is our ball-valve pallet system. Injection molding plays an important role at Cavagnolo, as many of our components are exclusive designs. These parts are manufactured in-house, one by one, using dedicated machinery and custom molds.
This ingenious ball system allows each pallet valve to rest perfectly against the accordion body, automatically compensating for the natural wear of felt components over time. The result is consistently excellent airtightness. It is easy to notice that our instruments lose significantly less air than many others when played with the same sound settings and playing force.
The benefit is simple: your accordion will not become an unnecessary “air leak.” Less wasted air means fewer bellows movements and greater playing efficiency, giving the musician better control and comfort.
There is another feature that may seem obvious, yet remains exclusive to our brand: every right-hand key is equipped with its own adjustment screw, allowing the precise balancing and regulation of the pallet system. There are no approximate bends or compromises on a Cavagnolo—only a perfectly adjusted mechanism.
Finally, all the reeds in our traditional accordions are mounted on the reed blocks using a combination of screws and nails, a method we have employed for decades. This distinctive assembly technique is part of our signature craftsmanship and reflects the attention to detail and care that go into the creation of every Cavagnolo instrument.
At the Cutting Edge of Technology
Cavagnolo has long established itself as a pioneer of innovation, combining exceptional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.
From its earliest days, the brand introduced groundbreaking developments such as double resonance chambers and dual-action register selectors. Cavagnolo was also ahead of its time in customization, replacing traditional celluloid finishes with lacquered coatings available in a wide range of unique colors.
Today, our carbon fiber accordions are among the most sought-after instruments we produce. Inspired by the worlds of aerospace engineering and luxury automotive design, this premium material combines lightness, strength, and exceptional rigidity. These qualities enhance the instrument’s acoustic performance, delivering greater projection and responsiveness.
Compared with a traditional model, a Cavagnolo carbon-fiber accordion offers more power, greater precision, and a truly unique playing experience.
Our Ultime Series pushes the boundaries even further, combining outstanding craftsmanship, unmatched lightness, and an unprecedented level of sound quality. It represents the ultimate expression of Cavagnolo expertise and innovation.
Cavagnolo and Electronic Innovation
Electronics Since 1965!
Voici une traduction adaptée à un site internet, fluide et professionnelle :
A Pioneer in Electronics Since the 1960s
Cavagnolo has always been at the forefront of electronic innovation, a commitment that dates back to the 1960s.
In 1965, the Majorvox was introduced, followed two years later by the Majorvox TS. The Moss arrived in 1974, followed by the famous button organ, the Prolog, in 1983. In 1984 came the MIDY 5, and in 1986 the DMX 123.
Along the way, Cavagnolo also developed the DJet 004, DJet 008, Exagone, Exagone Polyless, MIDI 3M, and MIDI 10. Then, in 1988, the MIDY 20 was launched and was notably used by Jean-Michel Jarre during several of his concerts.
As an interesting anecdote, the MIDY 20 was also produced in a completely redesigned version featuring a futuristic illuminated circular keyboard. This unique chassis incorporated the MIDY 20 technology and perfectly reflected Cavagnolo’s innovative spirit.
As for MIDI systems for accordion, the DMX 123, introduced in 1986, was later succeeded by the DMX 32. The programming ergonomics developed for these systems remained largely unchanged for many years, retaining the characteristic layout with two 7-segment displays.
In 2010, the company Cava-France succeeded three generations of the Cavagnolo family in leading the brand. Since that date, the Cavagnolo family has no longer been involved in the management of Cavagnolo.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Paule Cavagnolo and Mrs. Françoise Rive-Cavagnolo, whose unwavering support has always meant a great deal to us.
